making tukutuku mats

Over the past few weeks my classmates and I have been making tukutuku mats. First I got my plain white paper which had lines on it. I had to cut carefully along right up to the top.

Then I got some black and red strips of paper and I put them under, over, under, over across the white loom. First I did a red one and then a black one. It made a good pattern. I had to stick the ends down so then the strips wouldn't fall out.

In the end I cut the pieces that were outside the loom. Maori people have Tukutuku patterns on the walls in their meeting houses. They're pretty cool. Mrs Agnew took a photo and here it is:
